Core Facilities

The Biomedical Engineering (BME) Core Lab at the University of South Carolina is a teaching and research facility equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation to support our BME students and faculty members, and strengthen the educational component of the program as well as on-going research.

Equipment available to BME faculty and graduate students for both research and education purposes is outlined below. Please contact Dr. Silke Henrich to set up training and calendar access.

BME Biosafety Level 2 Cell Culture Lab, 1200 Catawba, Room 203

The BME Cell Culture Laboratory hosts two Labconco Type A2 cell culture stations: two 6-foot laminar flow hoods equipped with vacuum and 15-amp outlets. In addition, several modern workstations with chemical resistant countertops, shelving system, and 15-amp outlets support benchtop work. The laboratory also houses instrumentation required to support the maintenance of cell cultures and the analysis of cellular responses, including two CO2 incubators, two EVOS® XL Core Imaging Systems (life technologies), hemocytometers for cell counting, two refrigerated microcentrifuges with a diverse selection of rotors and adapters, an analytical balance (Mettler Toledo), a Bio-Rad CFX96 Real-Time PCR, a Molecular Devices SpectraMax190 absorbance micro plate reader with UV/VIS capability (SoftMax Pro Software), a 4 °C refrigerator, a ‑20 °C freezer, water bath, vortex, shakers, hot plate, and several micropipets and multichannel pipets with different volume capabilities.

BME Fluorescence Microscopy Lab, 1200 Catawba, Room 203

Room 204 at 1200 Catawba houses a Nikon Eclipse Ti-E fluorescent microscope with NIS Elements Advanced Research 4.5 imaging software as well as various DNA and protein gel electrophoresis and blotting equipment (Bio-Rad).

BME Imaging and Autoclaving Lab, 1200 Catawba, Room 205

This lab houses a Biotek / Synergy 2 and Synergy H1 Multi-Mode microplate readers with Gen5 Data Analysis software, a iBright™ CL 1500 Imaging System (Invitrogen), two autoclaves, an ice-machine, a water bath, an Elga Purelab flex3 water ultra-purification system with RO unit, a liquid nitrogen cryobiological storage system, and a ‑80 °C upright freezer.

BME Bioelectronics and Biomechanics Lab, 1200 Catawba, Room 214

The BME Bioelectronics/ Biomechanics Lab provides workstations (Great Lakes Neurotechnologies and PASCO) for biomechanical, biochemical, and bioelectronic measurements of physiological parameters such as ECG, EEG, EMG, EOG, respiratory rate, blood pressure, blood oxygen saturation, and other physiological biosignals. The lab also includes UniVert mechanical test systems (CellScale) for biomaterials testing. The facility is used primarily for undergraduate teaching purposes.
