Prior College Credits

Many of our freshmen have had the opportunity to take AP/IB classes or dual enrollment courses for prior college credit before enrolling at USC. To get an unofficial idea of how this may impact your course curriculum, below are some resources.

Find Out If Your AP/Dual Enrollment Credits Transfer

Find Your Courses

Determine what USC courses you may have credit for by searching the AP/IB credit table and/or the transfer credit table for dual enrollment courses.

Search the Major Map

See if any of the courses that you have USC credit for appear on the Major Map for your intended major. Take note that some of your credits could be for Carolina Core classes (like English 101). Take a look at the Carolina Core course options.

Examples of How to Check Your Credits

Example 1:

You are planning to major in Computer Science, and you took AP Math – Calculus AB and scored a 3 on the exam.

Looking at the AP credit table, you see that you have credit for MATH 141. Next, looking at the major map for Computer Science, you see that MATH 141 is a required course in the first semester.

So, AP Math = MATH 141. And yes, that does appear on my major map.

Please note that we would still like you to take the math Placement test as a diagnostic tool to determine if there is any reason you may want to retake MATH 141. That will be a conversation that you have with your advisor at summer orientation, and most students do not end up retaking MATH 141.

Example 2:

You are planning to major in Civil Engineering, and you took AP Psychology and scored a 4.

Looking at the AP credit table, you see that you have credit for PSYC 101. Next, looking at the major map for Civil Engineering, PSYC 101 does not appear. But maybe PSYC 101 fulfills a Carolina Core requirement. Yes, PSYC 101 meet the GSS requirement. Now back to the major map, is there a GSS requirement? Yes, there is.

So, AP psychology = PSYC 101 = Carolina Core GSS. And yes, that does appear on my major map.

Example 3:

You are planning to major in Electrical Engineering, and you took ECE 102 at Midlands Technical College.

Looking at the transfer credit table you see that ECE 102 gives you credit for ELCT 102. Next, looking at the major map for Electrical Engineering, ELCT 102 appears as a required course in the second semester.

So, MTC ECE 102 = USC ELCT 102. And yes, that does appear on my major map.
