Gloria Boutte, Ph.D., chair

Dr. Gloria Swindler Boutte is a Carolina Distinguished Professor at the University of South Carolina. Her scholarship focuses on equity pedagogies. She is the author/editor of five books: (1) We Be Lovin’ Black Children: Becoming Learning to Be Literate About the African Diaspora; (2) African Diaspora Literacy: The Heart of Transformation in K-12 Schools and Teacher Education (2019 AESA Critics Choice Award) (3) Educating African American Students: And how are the children; (4) Resounding Voices: School Experiences of People From Diverse Ethnic Backgrounds; and (5) Multicultural Education: Raising Consciousness. She has nearly 100 publications. Dr. Boutte has presented nationally and internationally on equity issues and has received prestigious awards such as the Fulbright Scholar; Fulbright Specialist; 2020 National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Outstanding Educator in the English Language Arts—Elementary Section; and the 2021 American Educational Research Association (AERA) 2021 Division K Legacy award. She is the founder and Executive Director of the Center for the Education and Equity of African American Students (CEEAAS).

Daniella Ann Cook, Ph.D., vice chair/treasurer

Daniella Ann Cook is an associate professor in the Department of Instruction and Teacher Education (ITE) at the University of South Carolina. Her research and scholarship address three intersecting themes: historical and contemporary narratives of black educators, public policy with a focus on community engagement and identifying factors that support student access to rigorous curricula across diverse schooling contexts. These three areas reflect her commitment to the democratic project of sustaining racially just and equitable schooling for communities traditionally underserved by public education.

Eurydice Bauer, Ph.D., member-at-large

Professor Bauer is the John E. Swearingen Chair of Education and Professor in Department of Instruction & Teacher Education, University of South Carolina, Columbia, South Carolina. Prior to her current position at USC, she was an Associate Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Crystal L. Murillo, Ph.D., RN, CHSE-A

Dr Crystal Murillo is currently an Assistant Professor and Director of Clinical Simulation in the College of Nursing. She is also an adjunct faculty for the Harvard Center for Medical Simulation and President of the South Caroling Nursing Education Simulation Alliance (SCNESA). Her research interests are specific to using education, specifically simulation as the conduit, to achieve health equity.

Toni M. Williams, Ph.D., member-at-large

Dr. Toni M. Williams is an Assistant Professor in the Instruction and Teacher Education department at the University of South Carolina. Creating meaningful, authentic learning for students of all backgrounds is Williams' priority in teaching. She currently works with middle school pre-service teachers. Research interests include life histories of middle school pre-service teacher and literate lives of students of color. Moreover she is interested in issues of social justice and diversity in education through literacy with a critical race lens.

Todd Shaw, Ph.D., recorder

Todd Shaw has been on faculty since 2003 and has appointments both in USC's Department of Political Science and the African American Studies Program. He was appointed the College of Arts & Science Distinguished Associate Professor of Political Science and African American Studies by Dean Mary Ann Fitzpatrick in August of 2012. He served as the Interim Chair and then Chair of the Department of Political Science from 2017 to 2019. Until July 2021, he is serving as the Interim Associate Dean of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Social Sciences in the College of Arts & Sciences. He researches and teaches broadly in the areas of African American politics, urban politics and public policy, as well as citizen activism and social movements.
