Background

Dr. Jeannette Andrews – recognized nationally and globally for her work in community engaged research and tobacco control interventions with underserved women -– is the seventh Dean and Helen Gurley Wolford Professor of Nursing at the University of South Carolina College of Nursing. 

  • With a combined 35 years in nursing practice and education, Dr. Andrews has led transformational innovations that have impacted the health of communities and education and support for future nurses, including advanced practice registered nurses and nurse scientists.
  • Dr. Andrews is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, a Robert Wood Johnson Nurse Executive Fellow, and an AACN-Wharton Executive Fellow.

Dr. Andrews achieved success as a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded investigator for multiple community trials utilizing innovative community engagement approaches to address tobacco prevention and cessation with disparate communities.

  • She has authored over 200 publications and abstracts, has served as an international and national consultant along with contributing to multiple task groups related to health and nursing.
  • Dr. Andrews has an extensive history of mentoring doctoral students and junior faculty.
  • Selected awards include SNRS Researcher in Minority Health, South Carolina Health Care Hero Award, Palmetto Gold Award, NPACE National Nurse Practitioner Award, Veterans Administration National Professional Nurse Award, and Georgia Nurses Association-Nurse of the Year.
  • Prior to arriving at the university, she served as the Associate Dean for Research and Director of the Center for Community Health Partnerships at the Medical University of South Carolina from 2007-2012.
  • Clinically, Dr. Andrews is a family nurse practitioner, and has a robust history in practice working in medical surgical units, intensive care units and primary care.

Since arriving at the university as Dean in 2013, Dr. Andrews has led significant growth, quality outcomes, and diverse partnerships –all of which propelled the college as a nationally recognized premiere College of Nursing. The undergraduate BSN program is now in the top 1% in the nation for best first-time pass rates on the NCLEX exams.

  • The Master’s and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs consistently average 95-100% board pass rates.
  • The Ph.D. program has more than tripled enrollment, and students receive substantial financial support and fellowship opportunities during their training.
  • The U.S. News and World Report designated the college No. 1 for graduate online programs three times in a row.
  • The college's NIH rankings are now No. 28 among all Colleges of Nursing in the country -- No. 1 in the state.
  • Donor support for scholarships and endowed professors have also doubled in the last eight years.

Dr. Andrews received her Ph.D. in Nursing Science from the University of South Carolina (2004), Masters in Nursing with a Family Nurse Practitioner specialty from Georgia Southern University (1996), and Bachelor’s in Nursing Science from the Medical College of Georgia (1986).  

Teaching

Dr. Andrews has extensive nursing graduate and interprofessional teaching experiences. She developed and taught clinical courses for nurse practitioner and DNP programs to include pathophysiology, pharmacology, health assessment and clinical preceptorships. Within Ph.D. programs, she has developed and taught advanced research methods and design, advanced measurement, theory, and various health disparities courses. Andrews has mentored masters, DNP and Ph.D. students, and chaired numerous dissertations, thesis and projects.

Dr. Andrews has a consistent track-record of research funding since 2000:

  • National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR), National Heart Blood & Lung Institute, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disorders, National Cancer Institute (NCI), Department of Defense (DOD), American Cancer Society and others.

Her research expertise includes community engaged and patient-centered partnership models that focus on cancer and cardiovascular risk reduction. Most her work has targeted smoking cessation interventions in underserved communities and clinical settings. Prior to coming to the university, Andrews was the director of the South Carolina Clinical and Translational Research Institute (SCTR) Community Engagement Core and Associate Dean for Research at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Dr. Andrews has disseminated over 200 peer-reviewed publications and abstracts in international/national conferences and high impact research journals:

Professional Service 

  • Dr. Andrews has served as a scientific reviewer for the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) and the NIH.
  • She serves as a manuscript reviewer for several interprofessional and nursing journals.
  • She is member of the Health Behavior Expert Panel in the American Academy of Nursing (AAN).
  • She is an active member of several professional organizations, including the AAN, American Nurses Association (ANA), Sigma Theta Tau International, Southern Nursing Research Society (SNRS), and the Council of Advancement of Nursing Science.
  • Dr. Andrews is a Robert Wood Johnson Nurse Executive Fellow (2007 cohort).
