Mary McElveen

What drew you to the field of medicine?

I want to go into the medical field because it is the best way to merge the world of learning with service. Medicine never stops changing and growing, and I look forward to teaching myself new things every day. As rare and amazing of an opportunity as that is, medicine also allows you to work knowing that you are helping someone in need. Whether it is in a lab or doing research, you work towards making someone else's life healthier and happier. Growing up with two caring and intelligent parents who gave me a love for education and empathy for those around me, medicine was the clearest path for me to pursue in college.

What are your future plans?

I know that I want to go to medical school. As to what I want to do afterward, I still have some figuring out to do. I look forward to learning about neurology, pathology, neonatology, and developmental psychology. I find so many of these topics fascinating, but I am unsure as to which one I will make my career. I want to work with disadvantaged communities around the world and I particularly enjoy working with children.
