Substance Abuse Prevention and Education

Refer a Student

The Students Taking Initiative & Responsibility (STIR) program empowers students to examine the powerful influence substances can have on their lives in a safe space.

Submit a Referral Form

Are you concerned about a USC student's substance use? Contact us. We can help.

What happens when I refer a student?

We will ask if you have let the student know that you're referring them. If you have not, we will be in touch with you for more information before contacting the student.

Referred students will go through a brief screening and intervention designed to reduce high-risk behavior and the consequences of their substance use. STIR coaches help students become better able to recognize their challenges and progress towards their goals.

Self-Injury and Threatening Behavior

If you have a more critical concern about a student, you should submit a Student Care and Outreach Team (CARE Team) Referral

Submit a Care Team Referral for:

  • Suicide attempt or talking about suicide
  • Illegal drug use
  • Disordered eating
  • Self-harming behaviors
  • Emotional distress
  • Threats to bring a weapon on campus
