Identity and Access Management Program

The Identity and Access Management (IAM) program at the University of South Carolina is primarily focused on improving and simplifying the technology and business processes that allow authorized individuals to access the right university services at the right time.

 

Accomplishments

  • Migrated the identity management infrastructure off the mainframe computer
  • Introduced the MyAccount.sc.edu portal to facilitate the self-service management of a user’s identity and authentication information
  • Updated the Data Information Governance policy
  • Updated a cornerstone IAM policy, UNIV 1.51: Data Information Governance
  • Increased Security by expanding the use of Multifactor Authentication
  • Appointed a Deputy Chief Information Security Officer to assist with the IAM Program Strategy
  • Appointed a Security Architect to assist with the IAM Program Design and recommendations
  • Advertised a position for an IAM Program Manager

Roadmap Items

  • Work with organizational units to develop tools and processes to audit their users’ access permissions
  • Work with organizational units to simplify the account claiming portion of the onboarding policy
  • Work with the system campuses and departmental domains to simplify identity relationships throughout the university system
  • Improve deprovisioning rules to better manage accounts that are no longer required
  • Develop a plan to improve the management of privileged account access and use across the university
  • Develop a plan and acquire resources required to support the continued evolution of IAM
