J-1 Insurance Requirements

  • Repatriation of Remains in the amount of $25,000
    • **Repatriation of Remains is not included in UofSC's standard health insurance. You will need to purchase supplemental health insurance to cover this.**
  • Expenses associated with the medical evacuation of the exchange visitor to his or her home country in the amount of $50,000
    • **Medical evacuation coverage is not included in UofSC's standard health insurance. You will need to purchase supplemental health insurance to cover this.**
  • A deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness
  • A policy underwritten by an insurance carrier with:
    • an A.M. Best rating of ‘‘A-’’ or above;
    • a McGraw Hill Financial/Standard & Poor’s Claims paying Ability rating of ‘‘A-’’ or above;
    • a Weiss Research, Inc. rating of ‘‘B+’’ or above;
    • a Fitch Ratings, Inc. rating of ‘‘A-’’ or above;
    • a Moody’s Investor Services rating of ‘‘A3’’ or above

Repatriation of Remains and Medical Evacuation Coverage

As a J-1 visa holder, the U.S. Department of State requires you to have coverage for repatriation of remains. Since the university health insurance plan does not have this, you will need to purchase additional coverage. J-1 students have previously used the following companies to purchase supplemental insurance. The information provided here is for general guidance only and is not intended to be an endorsement of any specific company or services.
