Health and Well Being in Music Education

Supporting students, school and communities through music

The artistic processes of creating, performing, responding and connecting provide unique experiences in self-awareness and personal efficacy to musicians of all ages and abilities. Music educators are well-situated to teach skills and dispositions through music performance, leading to students becoming more competent. The course will prepare music teachers to engage more students through creative processes. Also, students will learn to guide and lead community conversations about the value and benefits of music to students, school and the community.

The course is designed and intended for all musicians: undergraduate and graduate music education and music performance majors, public and private school teachers, and applied lesson instructors.  Registration options are listed below.

This hybrid course is available for undergraduate or graduate credit as well as a 5.15 CEU certificate. Full details are available in our flyer. Course schedule is below.

Inclusive Music Circles: Pre-K to Grade 5

This course is designed for music educators, music therapists and drum circle facilitators to develop and practically apply methods, techniques and practices for leading and engaging students, Pre-K to Grade 5 in creative music performance circles that emphasize improvisation, responsive musicianship, social- emotional awareness, student leadership, and community building using body percussion, voice, drums and small percussion.

This course can be taken for graduate or undergraduate credit (3 cr.) or as a Workshop-CEU Certificate.  Full details can be found on our flyer. Course Schedule for this hybrid course is below.

Registration & Fees

 Register for CEUs OR University credit. Do not register for both.

CEU Registration 

  • Register for Health and Wellbeing in Music Education: School of Music current students and alums - $300; Coaching teachers - $150; and all other music teachers (public, private, applied, etc) - $450.
  • Register for Inclusive Music Circles: PreK to Grade 5:  School of Music current students and alums - $300; Coaching teachers - $150; and all other music teachers (public, private, applied, etc) - $450.

Graduate Credit Registration
Coaching teachers and others who desire graduate credit but are not current UofSC students must do the following to register for Health & Wellbeing in Music Education or Inclusive Music Circles: PreK to Grade 5. (Coaching teacher who are current UofSC students use steps 2 and 3).

  1. Apply to the University as a non-degree seeking student.
  2. Use Self Service Carolina to register for your desired course(s).
    a.     Health & Wellbeing in MUED (MUED 554-CRN 73941)
    b.     Inclusive Music Circles (MUED 554-CRN 75359)
  3. Coaching teachers then email Chris Burkett, Executive Director of Gamecock EdQuarters, to redeem your coaching teacher credits.

Current UofSC students who desire graduate or undergraduate credit, use Self Service Carolina to register.


Online Master of Music Education

We are excited about the slate of opportunities we are planning for this program. We intend that enrollees will gain skills and experiences that are immediately applicable to your classroom and prepare you for scholarly work in music and music education. 

Credit Distribution:

MUSC  11 credits Up to 3 may come from the College of Education
MUED  18 credits

MUED 790 - required, 3 credits
MUED 795 - required, 3 credits

Theory 3 credits
