South Carolina Double Reed Day

Double reed players of all ages and abilities are invited to the biennial South Carolina Double Reed Day at UofSC, led by oboe professor Hassan Anderson and bassoon professor Michael Harley. You can experience a full day of clinics, reed classes, recitals and master classes for the oboe and bassoon at the fall event. S.C. Double Reed Day at USC takes place every other year.

SC Double Reed Day is Saturday, Nov. 20, 2021

9 a.m. – 5 p.m.  at the UofSC School of Music Building (813 Assembly St., Columbia, SC)

  • 8:30-9:30 a.m. Registration/Check-In, School of Music Lobby
  • 9:30-10:00 Recital
  • 10:15-11:15 Junior oboe and bassoon master classes, 6th-8th grades, Prof. Anderson, Prof. Harley
  • 10:15-11:15 Admission Success with Jennifer Mitchell, Assistant Director of Admissions UofSC School of Music
  • 12:00-1:00 Pizza lunch, provided
  • 1:00-2:00 Oboe and and bassoon fundamentals workshops, 6th-8th grades, UofSC oboe studio
  • 1:00-2:30 Clinic, senior, and college oboe and bassoon master classes, 9th-12th grade +, Prof. Anderson, Prof. Harley
  • 2:45-3:45 “Mindfulness for Young Musicians”, Jennifer Parker-Harley, UofSC Flute Professor, Mindfulness Specialist 
  • 4:00-5:00 Double reed ensemble reading session (everyone!)
     
    EXHIBITS ALL DAY: 10-1, 1:30-3:45

All events will be socially distanced and masked when possible.  Face coverings are required inside buildings on the UofSC campus.

Activities and classes for beginning, intermediate and advanced reed players ensure a day full of great learning, listening and playing experiences.

School of Music faculty members host the event, which culminates with a double reed ensemble performance by all participants.

The day's activities include:

  • A recital by professor Anderson and professor Harley
  • Masterclasses for oboists and bassoonists of all levels, focused on all-state etudes and solo repertoire
  • “Mindfulness for Young Musicians” - presentation by UofSC flute professor Jennifer Parker-Harley 
  • Jennifer Mitchell, Assistant Director of Admissions for the UofSC School of Music, in a presentation and Q&A especially for high school students considering majoring in music
  • Fundamentals sessions for younger students
  • Basic oboe and bassoon repair
  • Double reed ensemble concert of all participants
  • Vendors with accessories, music, and instruments for sale

Cost

$40 registration fee (non-refundable) covers all activities and lunch. Walk-up registration is $45. Parents may attend for free.
Registration check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. and events start at 9:30 a.m.
