South Carolina Honors College

Grace Davis

Ask me about… Changing your major, internships, working on campus, and getting involved!

I am from Greenville, SC, and I’m majoring in Public Health and minoring in Spanish. After undergrad, I plan on getting my Master’s degree in Public Health before going to medical school! I am involved in Dance Marathon, a professional pre-health fraternity, and also work on campus.

My advice for prospective students: When finding the college for you, look for the school where you want to be! Think about the campus, degree offerings, city, atmosphere, and the people. Your happiness is most important at the end of the day, so choose the place that you think will be best for you, even if the decision is difficult!

My advice for current students: Have some fun! School is our top priority and we are preparing ourselves for life after graduation, but it is also important to enjoy the freedoms and opportunities to enjoy life that we have right now! Grab late night snacks with friends, go to the game, explore Columbia. Enjoy your time as a student!

My favorite thing about the Honors College: I love the classes in Honors! The professors are engaging and the students are excited about learning, which fosters a collaborative and active environment. The smaller class size also allows professors to teach classes with creativity, which enriches the experience. SCHC also offers a lot of cool courses unique to the Honors College, which are a fun way to fulfill credits and learn about things you may not otherwise!

My reason for choosing the SCHC: I always wanted to attend a large university with a bustling campus. However, I thrive academically in a more intimate learning environment. The SCHC provided the perfect opportunity to have both. The community is close and there are so many opportunities to form relationships with students and professors. But, this community is within the big school with so many opportunities to meet new people, try new things, and experience the big-campus life.

My favorite things: I love Greek food, stand-up comedy specials, art museums, and playing guitar. I also do a lot of crossword puzzles, hiking, and swing dancing with friends.

Something that makes me laugh: My younger brother! He has a knack for sarcasm and also a pretty long list of references from sit-coms like Brooklyn-99, The Office, and Parks and Rec.

Currently reading: Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi. It's a story about a Ghanian family that moved to Alabama. The daughter is a fifth-year candidate in neuroscience and struggling to reconcile her maturity with her childhood naivety and faith in something greater.

Favorite study music: Anything without lyrics!

My motto in life: Vici Omnia Pertinax Vertus. My grandpa told me this quote that means “tenacious virtue overcomes all.” It’s a good reminder to carry into each day.

My life goal: I would love to research pressing health threats and then serve as a consultant for policy-makers in the process of addressing these health threats at the national or international level. My goal is to do good and I think my skills and passions would allow me to do that in the global and public health world!
