A number of merit-based financial awards and fellowships are available through the Graduate School, across campus and from various organizations nationwide.

Prospective Student Fellowships and Awards

Bridge to the Doctorate Fellowship Program

The Bridge to the Doctorate Fellowship Program is committed to engaging students from underrepresented populations in graduate study within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields of study in the College of Arts & Sciences (CAS) and Engineering & Computing (CEC).

Grace Jordan McFadden Professors Program

Open to prospective and current doctoral and MFA students, this program prepares underrepresented minority students to become professors. Scholars are provided $40,000 in additional funding over 4 years and receive training specifically designed to help them diversify the professoriate.

Presidential Fellowship

Designed to impact both the academic and ethnic diversity across the University, the Presidential Fellowship awards doctoral students with $40,000 in additional funding over 4 years ($25,000 over 5 semesters for MFA students). Fellows are part of an engaged community and participate in an innovative progression of seminars and professional development workshops.

Rising Star Fellowship (pilot program)

The Rising Star Fellowship provides funding to HBCU students interested in pursuing Master's or Doctoral level degrees at UofSC.  Rising Star Fellows receive full tuition and fees, as well as a full health insurance subsidy and annual stipend.

Trustee Recruiting Fellowships

These one-time (non-renewable) awards are given to current graduate students in memory of individuals who influenced particular fields of study and the University of South Carolina during their lifetimes.

Dean's Award for Excellence in Leadership

Awarded to graduate students demonstrating leadership on campus, in their academic discipline or in the community.

Outstanding Community Engagement Award

Awarded to any graduate student who has shown commitment to the Carolina community or beyond in the academic year through community service, social advocacy, civic engagement, or volunteerism.

Outstanding Dissertation Award

Awarded to individuals who have completed dissertations representing original work that makes a significant contribution to the discipline. Individuals awarded are nominated for the national CGS/ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Award.

Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award

Awarded to graduate students who have shown themselves to be exceptional graduate instructors or instructional assistants.

Outstanding Research Award

Awarded to Ph.D. or Master’s students who have conducted research in the academic year that is vital to their academic discipline and society at large.

Trustee Fellowships

Awarded to current students in memory of individuals who influenced particular fields of study and/or the University of South Carolina during their lifetimes.
