The School of Library and Information Science hosted Information Science Day featuring research presentations by 14 undergraduate students.
The annual event, now in its fourth year, is open to students in all majors who are interested in issues involving information science and technology. The students write an abstract, create a research poster and present their work to judges who are currently working in the field.
This year’s posters covered topics ranging from anxiety in college students to attitudes about autonomous aircrafts. Several students also presented about their internship experiences.
At the conclusion of the event, winners were selected by the judges.
Kyle Lang, a management major and information science minor, took home the Undergraduate Research Award. Lang studied which personal qualities were deemed most important by Columbia-area hiring managers. He concluded that a traditional resume and strong interpersonal skills are still the best bet for job seekers hoping to impress. See his poster»
Information science majors Stephanie Do and Charles Rodriquez won Internship Experience Awards. Do shared about her time with Cocky’s Reading Express and Rodriquez about his internship with Fort Jackson as a systems management and integration officer. In addition to his internship poster, Rodriquez also presented a research poster titled “Main Themes of Misrepresented Science on Twitter.”
Whether presenting on an internship or a research topic, each student who participated came away with valuable insights.
“I looked at whether people would trust fully automated aircraft,” said Arlington Johnson, an information science major with plans to become an airline pilot. “I found it interesting that most people would not trust automated passenger planes but more would trust automated cargo planes.”
