School of Visual Art and Design

For Students

Our School of Visual Art and Design students are hard at work making, building, documenting, and dreaming about the next big thing. Below are resources and useful links for School of Visual Art and Design students to support their work and studies. Stay involved, whether it be through university-recognized clubs, internships, or more.

Our degree programs can prepare you for successful work and careers in many fields. We encourage our students to find internships in an area of interest. The Career Center can help you prepare for an internship, and Handshake can help you find and apply for an internship in the Columbia area.

The School of Visual Art and Design fosters a sense of community in the arts. With connections to the Columbia Museum of Art, the Nickelodeon Theater, the Moving Image Research Collections, and interdisciplinary programs at the university, you can gain exposure to new and exciting ideas, programs, and visitors from all fields of practice and study.

The purpose of the Art History Club is to promote an interest in all things art and art history. We want to facilitate the discussion of art historical topics, plan community involvement projects, provide research and study help for art history students, invite guest speakers for lectures, and coordinate trips to museums, galleries, and academic conferences.

Avant Grads provides an interface for graduate students to meet, converse, and attend events for the advocacy of visual art and art programming at the University of South Carolina. We encourage a community through an appreciation of the arts. Our club, which meets on a monthly basis, allows members to participate in trips to museums, art conferences, art walks, gallery openings, and much more. We also have regular group activities to foster our community of grad students. To raise club funds we hold events such as Open Studios as well as participate in SVAD's Annual Holiday Art Sale. We encourage members to attend a majority of the meetings we hold, in order to stay up to date on club activities and discussion.

Avant Grads is open to individuals from all disciplines. In order to be a member an individual must be enrolled in a graduate program at the University of South Carolina. Any UofSC graduate student may be a member and participate in club activities.
