About the Shows

10 Minute Play Festival

February 23-26, 2023
Lab Theatre

The Bear
by Anton Chekhov
Directed by Dustin Whitehead
3 Actors

Written in 1900, The Bear is one of the great works of Anton Chekhov, about the strange beginnings of love between the recently widowed Mrs. Popov and Grigory Stepanovich Smirnov. The title "The Bear" comes in Russian the word for "bear" which has two meanings: an animal or a rather rude, clumsy, awkward man.

Coq Au Vin
by Jon Robin Baitz
Directed by Marybeth Gorman Craig
3 Actors

Michael and Terry have been out of work so long that the only gig they can get is playing chickens at the local county fair. When they discover something sinister about the job, they face their dread by remembering their love of performing and being with each other. A darkly satiric look at the sacrifices two men must make to do what they love.

Gershwin’s Last Ride
by Ryan Stevens
Directed by Patrick Kelly
3 Actors

Gershwin, a prize-winning bull, goes one-on-one with the hottest pro bull rider today, AJ Hawkins. Gershwin's renowned for his fury, already has a body count, and given the right amount of stress he just might snap again. In ten minutes (and eight seconds), these two champions clash and leave forever changed.

Memory Sounds
by J.J. Steinfield
Directed by David Britt
2 Actors

In Memory Sounds (A One-Act Play), a twenty-year-old college student and an elderly Holocaust survivor meet by chance at a busy Lower East Side street corner, and their conversation results in a powerful history lesson for the student.

Three Guys and a Brenda
by Adam Bock
Directed by Erica Tobolski
4 Actors

Three guys sit around while one tries to screw up the courage to talk to a female co-worker. He does, and more. It may be hard being a guy, but these three manage to find a bit of bliss.

The Light

Written by Loy Webb
Directed by Ibi Owolabi
March 16-19, 2023
707 Catawba Studio
2 Actors, both African-American

Recipient of Chicago’s Jefferson Award for Best Play in 2018, The Light is a visceral, real-time roller coaster ride that sees a loving relationship rocked by secrets from the past. When we are introduced to Genesis and Rashad, it’s during the romantic high of a heartfelt marriage proposal. The happy plans are suddenly derailed, however, by an accusation of sexual assault that threatens to rip apart their bond of love and trust. “...the #MeToo play you didn’t know you wanted, but that you need to see.” — Nylon.  Contains mature content that is not appropriate for children.

Spring Awakening

Book and Lyrics by Steven Sater
Music by Duncan Sheik
Based on the play by Frank Wedekind
Directed by Travis Greisler with Music Direction by Eric Shorey
April 7-14, 2023
Drayton Hall Theatre
15-17 Actors

Winner of eight Tony® Awards, Spring Awakening is an exhilarating coming-of-age story set to a raucous rock score. Based on the provocative 1906 play by Frank Wedekind, this groundbreaking musical provides an unvarnished look at a group of teenagers grappling with issues of sexuality, identity, and society as they navigate the turbulent transition from innocence to adulthood. “...represents the sort of imaginative boost that the American musical desperately needs.” (Washington Post). Contains mature content that is not appropriate for children.

Theatre South Carolina embraces non-traditional casting and encourages the casting of ethnic minority actors, female actors, and physically-challenged actors where possible. Individual show directors, together with the artistic director and the acting faculty, make all casting decisions. While some parts may be cast before auditions, that is always the case with guest actors.
