Sideways Stories from Wayside School
October 6-14, 2023
Drayton Hall Theatre
This is a production for young audiences.
Adapted for the stage by John Olive
From the novels by Louis Sachar
(10 or more actors)
Things are always a bit wonky at the 30-story Wayside Elementary – the building’s only one classroom wide, for starters, and its 19th floor has mysteriously ceased to exist. It’s in mean Mrs. Gorf’s top-floor class, however, where things have gone completely sideways. Known for punishing students by magically turning them into apples, she finds herself the victim of her own spell and soon becomes lunch for a hungry, passing teacher! Based on Louis Sachar’s best-selling children’s books, Sideways Stories from Wayside School is a wild, wacky adventure full of fun and surprises, with some valuable lessons to share along the way.
10 Minute Play Festival

Lab Theatre
Directed by Theatre Performance Faculty
THE SCENE: A DEVISED PIECE
by the Company
Directed by Erica Tobolski (2 actors)
2 Actors play multiple characters in multiple stories based on the text from one Contentless Scene (also known as an A/B scene). The dialogue from these one-page scenes are open to interpretation and will be devised by the two actors in collaboration with the director. Since the text is repeated, the surprise comes from the versatility of the actor. There will be 4-5 finalized scenes in performance.

What happens when the people we create to hide our true selves get to live lives of their own? Tiffany is about to find out… but she’s gotta get through a very enthusiastic Orientation Coordinator first.

Life’s been “all shook up” for Casey, an aspiring Elvis impersonator struggling to
make it in showbiz. He’s broke, facing eviction, and just found out his wife is pregnant.
To make matters worse, he’s about to lose his only gig at a local dive bar to a much
more successful drag act. The only way he can survive? Ditch “The King” and learn
to embrace his inner Queen! Tony®-winning playwright Matthew Lopez’ hit Off-Broadway
comedy is a glittering, music-filled story of identity and acceptance, described as
“stitch-in-your-side funny” (The New York Times) and “a glorious tribute to the art of drag” (Variety
Theatre South Carolina embraces non-traditional casting and encourages the casting of ethnic minority actors, female actors, and physically-challenged actors where possible. Individual show directors, together with the artistic director and the acting faculty, make all casting decisions. While some parts may be cast before auditions, that is always the case with guest actors.
