In 2012 I obtained my bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from the University of Padova
in Italy, with a dissertation on the epistemology of space and time with respect to
Galileo, Newton and special theory of relativity. After my BA, I obtained my master’s
degree in Logic, Philosophy and History of Science at the University of Florence in
Italy. There, I had the opportunity to study (among other subjects): logic (set theory,
Gödel's theorems, proof theory), linear algebra and foundations of modern physics
(especially non-relativistic quantum mechanics). I spent the last six months of my
master at the MCMP in Munich, where I completed my master's thesis: “Moderate Structural
Realism and Bohmian Mechanics”.
My main interests are on history and philosophy of physics. More specifically, I am
currently working on the philosophical underpinning of path integrals and Feynman
diagrams and on the history of R. Feynman's physics and modern quantum field theories.

Kelly Gallagher kg6@email.sc.edu | My primary area of research is in contemporary neo-Aristotelian and Thomistic metaphysics. I am particularly interested in the relationship between Aristotelian conceptions of Nature and contemporary definitions of life. I explore this in my dissertation, where I argue that a strong version of hylomorphism (i.e. a Thomistic understanding) avoids the circularity problems that plague life definitions and thus provides a more fruitful framework for thinking about the nature of life. Furthermore, I am beginning to work on a related project where I argue that an Aristotelian understanding of Nature can provide a promising route for reconciling traditional views about essences with evolution, thus preserving belief in natural kinds. I also have an active interest in the role of skilled knowledge (techne) in human flourishing, and how technology can effect this for better or worse. When not doing academic things, I am probably doing renovation projects on my home or watching my chickens free range in the back yard. |

My research interests are primarily in the history of philosophy with an emphasis
on Pragmatism. Specifically, I am examining how John Dewey conceived of the role of
emotion in inquiry. I maintain that for Dewey, emotions are necessary and essential
features of all forms of inquiry, including science. Because of this, I suggest that
he held that good inquirers, scientists, artists, and workers generally, require a
holistic education that emphasizes and teaches emotional intelligence. I am also the Graduate Representative of our department. If you have questions about graduate life, please do not hesitate to contact me. Personal website: https://john-anderson-harris.com/ |

My research is on Philosophy of Science and the transfer of scientific models across
scientific domains. For my dissertation, I focus on cases of models developed in physics
that are then used by chemists. Besides Philosophy of Science my teaching experience
and interest range from logic to technology to applied ethics.
Outside of academia, I'm interested in public radio, having hosted my own show for
two years now. At the moment I'm working for the WUSC radio station as a public affairs
director, booking and organizing concerts for the Columbia music scene.
