An entrepreneur understands it's always possible to create something better. International business student Sydney Brookshire is already on her way to building a better world, starting with making a difference at the University of South Carolina.

As a freshman at the UofSC Darla Moore School of Business, Sydney was eager to get involved and expand her knowledge outside of the classroom.

"I rushed a business fraternity my first semester and unfortunately didn't get a bid," Sydney said. "The business fraternities all want to recruit top-notch students. I quickly realized that I needed to step up my game and figure out what I wanted to do in my college career so I could truly make an impact."

That's when she began her journey with the Entrepreneurship Club, a student-run organization open to all students who share a passion for creativity and innovation.

"I loved the presentation I heard at the first EClub meeting, but I didn't love how the club was structured," she said. "Every week they brought in a speaker and that was basically it. The president at the time said they needed some help on the executive board and I raised my hand and said, 'I'm just a freshman, but I want to do it.' "

After just two weeks at South Carolina, Sydney found herself serving on the EClub's executive board as the director of partnership. She spent nearly 10 hours a week planning various events including the EClub's largest event of the year, Backers and Hackers— a contest pairing business and computer science students to develop mobile apps over the course of three months.

Taking on a job at Tradeversity and a marketing internship at JoyRun, along with her involvement in EClub, Sydney fulfilled her goal of joining the business fraternity her second semester and also became the co-president of EClub where she could continue to make an impact.

Limitless opportunities

"EClub had a lot of great content in the previous year, but we didn't focus enough on what the students truly needed," she said. "During our first meeting of the new semester, the other co-president and I asked the members, 'What do you guys want to do? This is your club and we want to give you the resources we have to help you do anything you want.'"

Since the initial meeting, the EClub members have become more involved and passionate about the organization. They created event planning committees and two members even started an entrepreneurial podcast.

"This is how I want to run a company. I want everyone to be passionate about our mission statement and be willing to take strides and try new things."

Sydney's goal is to inspire younger students to get involved and start thinking outside of their classrooms at an earlier stage in their college careers.

"If you have an idea, go for it. It's not about waiting for someone else to do it. Take things into your own hands. Whether you learn new skills by studying abroad, start new organizations on campus or see EClub grow in a new way, we can learn a lot from our experiences and challenges. Never limit yourself."
