Faculty Principal of Galen Health Fellows

The University of South Carolina announces the search for the resident Faculty Principal of Galen Health Fellows, the University’s living-learning community focused on health science studies. This position is open to tenured faculty members at the level of associate professor or above, or professional-track faculty with at least 3 years of full-time appointments in their academic unit with a starting date of May 16, 2023. The position reports to both the Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Studies and the Associate Vice President of Student Housing and Sustainability and serves at the pleasure of the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost.

The faculty principal, with the active support of student residents, resident mentors, an assistant principal, and University Housing, will lead the community’s programs. Galen Health Fellows is a living-learning environment designed to enhance, both academically and experientially, the university experience of its residents who have expressed an interest in a future in health care.

The faculty principal’s duties include acting as the chief academic administrator; promoting intellectual exchange, leadership development, cultural diversity and inclusivity, and civic engagement, all with a health care focus; promoting collegiality among faculty and students; and interacting with the Executive Director of University Housing and with other university officials. The ideal candidate for the Galen Health Fellows Faculty Principal will have:

  • an undergraduate teaching and scholarly record of distinction in an area within the health sciences
  • a commitment to excellence in undergraduate education and mentoring
  • an appreciation of students from diverse backgrounds and with diverse interests
  • administrative, organizational, and supervisory skills

All applicants should discuss their interest in this position with their academic unit head. This position is limited to a term of 3 years with the possibility of renewal for one more term contingent upon mutual agreement from both parties including specific discussion of the transition out of and back into the responsibilities in the academic unit. As compensation, the Faculty Principal will receive an appropriate salary supplement and release from certain teaching duties. Compensation will be negotiated with the Provost. The appointment is expected to begin May 16, 2023.
