Nikky Finney

South Carolina native Nikky Finney is the John H. Bennett, Jr. Chair in Southern Letters and Literature at the University of South Carolina where she holds dual appointments in creative writing and African American studies. A child of activists, Finney came of age during the civil rights and Black Arts Movements, a legacy which informs and empowers her work. She is the author of four books of poetry—Head Off & Split (2011), winner of the 2011 National Book Award for poetry; The World Is Round (2003); Rice (1995); On Wings Made of Gauze (1985)—the and novella Heartwood (1997). Finney is the editor of the Cave Canem anthology The Ringing Ear: Black Poets Lean South and cofounder of the Affrilachian Poets.
