Started in the summer of 2011, the Right Choice, Fresh Start Farmers' Market is a collaborative project between the Cancer Prevention and Control Program and Family Health Centers, Inc., a Federally Qualified Health Center in Orangeburg. The Farmers' Market is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and National Institutes of Health and is founded on the idea that there is a relationship between access to fresh produce and positive health outcomes, bringing fresh fruits and vegetables from local farms to communities that currently have poor access to fresh produce and would receive the most health benefit from such access. The Orangeburg area in particular is an excellent setting for this Farmers' Market, as individuals in this area experience high poverty rates and increased incidence of chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure. This project not only helps improve the health of the community but also offers economic opportunities for local farmers and vendors.
