Environmental Factors

There has been substantial research indicating that environmental exposures, in conjunction with genetics and lifestyle choices, can be a risk factor for many diseases, including cancer. Here at the Cancer Prevention and Control Program, we recognize that investigations into the link between environmental factors and cancer are essential in parsing out the complex underpinnings of cancer development.

Role of Brominated Water Disinfection By-Products in Liver Function, Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome

Study Period: 5/16/145/15/15

This study will examine the relationship between water disinfection by-products and liver disease, Type II diabetes, and metabolic syndrome in a nationally representative sample of the United States population (NHANES 1999-2006).

Assessing Public Health Needs and Developing a Sustainable Water Irrigation System for Organic Coffee Crops in La Victoria, Ecuador

In collaboration with community members, we will complete construction and an evaluation of a gravity fed water pipeline and irrigation system to address the needs of organic coffee farmers in La Victoria, Ecuador. We also will use Photovoice methodology to identify and characterize the Public Health needs in La Victoria, including issues related to water access and sanitation.
