The Carolina Core is the foundation of USC's undergraduate academic experience. Carolina Core courses prepare students with the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to thrive in an increasingly complex world. Students select foundational Carolina Core courses that span the liberal arts and sciences. In addition they choose an integrated Carolina Core course in their program major and apply Core competencies in that particular field.

The Carolina Core has 10 Core components, each with learning outcome and credit hour requirements. The Carolina Core Requirements Chart shows what students need to take in order to satisfy the curriculum. Most foundational Carolina Core courses meet 1 of the learning outcome requirements, but overlay courses offer students the option of meeting 2 Core learning outcomes in a single course. No more than 2 overlay courses may be used to complete the Carolina Core requirements.
