Background

Dr. Valerio is professor of music education and Director of the Children's Music Development Center (CMDC) at the University of South Carolina. After teaching elementary general music in the public schools of Lawrence, Kan., Valerio received M.M. and Ph.D. degrees from Temple University, Philadelphia, Pa. Valerio is a member of National Association for Music in Education, Society for Music Teacher Education, Early Childhood Special Research Interest Group (Chair), Gordon Institute for Music Education (Certification Faculty), American Orff-Schulwerk Association and National Association for the Education of Young Children. She is a frequent presenter at national and international music education professional development conferences. 

Research

Dr. Valerio’s research interests include early childhood and elementary music development. Her research has been sponsored by The Texaco Foundation, The Presser Foundation, University of South Carolina and Temple University. Her work is featured in “Journal for Research in Music Education,” “Learning from Young Children: Research in Early Childhood Music”(Rowman & Littlefield),“Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education,” “Musical Experience in Our Lives: Things We Learn and Meanings We Make” (Rowman & Littlefield), “Listen to Their Voices” (Canadian Music Educators Association), “The Development and Practical Application of Music Learning Theory”(GIA), “Music Play: Bah Bah, Bebop, Beethoven” (GIA), and she is co-author of “Music Play” (GIA), and “Jump Right In: The Music Series” (GIA).

Teaching

Dr. Valerio teaches MUED 796 Seminar in Music Education Research, MUED 792 Music Learning Theory, MUED 785 Measurement & Evaluation of Music Learning, MUED 565 Specialized Elementary Music Methods, MUED 465 Music in the Elementary School, MUED 454 Music for Young Children, MUED 107 Classroom instruments. Valerio supervises a graduate assistant program for USC M.M.E. and Ph.D. students who provide early childhood music development and education at the Children’s Center at USC, St. Peter’s Catholic Elementary School, and the School of Music Community Music School. She also supervises a variety of early childhood and elementary music practicum experiences for undergraduate music education majors, and she advises dissertations and theses.
