Southern Exposure New Music Series

Southern Exposure 2016-2017 Season

A stylistic and instrumental smorgasbord

Our 2016-17 season features concerts by four distinct instrument families in turn – fretted strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion – in programs designed for maximum exploration of the sonic and stylistic possibilities of each instrument.

All shows are free and take place at 7:30 p.m. in the USC School of Music Recital Hall, 813 Assembly St., Columbia SC, unless otherwise noted.

Mak Grgic and Dan Lippel

Dueling Guitars: FretX Duo (Mak Grgic and Dan Lippel)

Thu., Sept. 8, 2016

Two of America’s leading guitar virtuosos join forces in a wide-ranging program of music from modernist icon György Ligeti to post-minimal favorite Marc Mellits. Think dueling banjos with a twist!

Imani Winds

Wind Power: Imani Winds

Fri., Oct. 28, 2016

The nation’s most esteemed wind quintet, Imani Winds return to Southern Exposure in a concert that caps a weeklong residency at USC. Is a woodwind quintet arrangement of Stravinsky’s landmark Rite of Spring really a good idea? Come and find out.

SaVaSa Trio

Brass Attack: SaVaSa Trio

Thu., Feb. 16, 2017

This concert presents SaVaSa Trio, a highly unusual ensemble of two trumpets and French horn. All three players are members of the legendary German group Ensemble Modern; they are joined in this concert by members of the USC jazz faculty, including Bert Ligon (piano), Bryson Borgstedt (saxophone) and Craig Butterfield (bass).

Third Coast Percussion

Percussion Beat-Down: Third Coast Percussion

Fri., March 24, 2017

The 2016-17 Southern Exposure season ends with a bang, as this hard-driving percussion quartet from Chicago, called “vibrant” and “superb” by The New Yorker, makes their Southern Exposure debut. Their virtuosic program includes a new work by Princeton composer Donnacha Dennehy, and Steve Reich’s iconic Mallet Quartet.
