About the Society
As you may know, USC has several recognition societies, but the Sumwalt Society is the only recognition society within the College of Engineering and Computing. A gift of $1,000 or more annually secures your place in this society. You can even choose to designate how your donation will be used.

About Dr. Sumwalt
Dr. Robert Sumwalt served as acting president of the University of South Carolina from 1957 to 1959 and president from 1959 to 1962. In 1921, he attended the University of Delaware, where he received a professional engineering degree and began a lifelong correspondence with Pierre DuPot. He joined the faculty at UofSC in 1926 as associate professor in civil engineering, and became full professor in 1931. Sumwalt served as dean of the School of Engineering in 1943, overseeing a period of steady growth in both the engineering program and university expansion.
The Sumwalt Building at Greene and Sumter Streets on the USC campus is named in his honor, and for many years housed the engineering administration, classrooms and labs.
