Art Education

Students pursuing a degree in art education receive broad exposure to studio art, art history, education, and criticism and aesthetics. Our Art Education programs train and produces most of South Carolina’s K-12 art teachers! 

Art History

The art history program offers courses in American, European and Asian art and architecture across all chronological periods. Students develop skills in research, analysis, criticism, and theory. 

Studio Art

Studio art encompasses seven areas of studio specialization: ceramics, drawing, graphic design + illustration, painting, photography, printmaking, and 3D studies. 

Media Arts

Students in our media arts program study and make films, video games, manga, animations, internet art, mobile applications, screenwrite films, and more.

Students can take classes in all areas of studio and media arts, as well as courses in the history of art and art education. This includes everything from video game design, screenwriting, and graphic design & illustration, to the history of art from antiquity to the present, to theory and education in the visual arts. 

Meet our Faculty and Staff

We are a community of award-winning artists, scholars, and educators, with teaching and research expertise across the areas of art education, art history, media arts, and studio art. We are also leaders and participants in a range of interdisciplinary programs and centers across campus, including Film and Media Studies, Women's and Gender Studies, Institute for Southern Studies, the McKissick Museum, Center for Digital Humanities, and Rhodos Fellows.
