Time and Place

The 2024 series will run March 18-April 10, with book talks each Monday and author appearances each Wednesday. All talks and author appearances will begin at 6 p.m. in the Campus Room of Capstone on Barnwell Drive. Author appearances will be followed by refreshments and book signing.

 

Parking

The Open Book is unable to guarantee parking, but there are several good parking options near Capstone, including a metered lot between Capstone and Columbia Hall, a metered lot just across Barnwell by the Close/Hipp Building, and metered parking on nearby surface streets. (Parking at meters is free after 6 p.m.) There are handicapped spaces in and near the Capstone lot as well as in the looped drive in front of Close/Hipp (the former location of the Moore School of Business). You can also find metered parking in Pendleton Garage, two blocks away, at the corner of Pendleton and Pickens. In addition, there is a lot behind Gambrell Hall, one block away, off Greene, which is open to the public (for free) after 5 p.m., though it can be a challenge to find an open space in that lot. If you are planning to dine in Five Points following The Open Book, you might consider parking near your restaurant and making the short (but steep) walk up the hill, either up Greene Street or on the sidewalk that crosses the railroad tracks behind Cellar on Greene. But most participants are able to find area street parking. (If you have additional parking questions, please consult the online campus maps or USC parking services.)

 

Books

The visiting authors are delighted to sign books after their talks. The University of South Carolina Bookstore will have books for purchase on site, or you can purchase books in advance at All Good Books, which is located at 734 Harden Street in Five Points. In addition, the Richland County Public Library has electronic (and some print) books available for checkout.

 

Attendance

The Open Book is free and open to everyone. You may attend all eight nights as a public course—or just come out to hear a favorite author or two. Seating is first come, first served.
