Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures

Japanese

The University of South Carolina at Columbia offers minor and cognate programs in Japanese. Each semester approximately 250 students, both undergraduate and graduate, study the Japanese language and culture. Every year the number of highly motivated students who decide to learn Japanese increases.

The Japanese Program offers a wide variety of culture and literature courses as well as language courses at all levels, from novice to advanced. There are extracurricular club activities available. The Japan club is very active in connecting USC students with students from Japan. The club sponsors Japanese cultural events and promotes social gatherings for cultural exchange. The Japanese anime club is also very active in showing Japanese anime and hosting conventions in Columbia.

The program has an official exchange partner with Kansai University in Japan and there are other study opportunities in Japan through the Study Abroad Office.

The opportunity for teaching English in Japan is available through the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) program, promoted by the Japanese consulate in Atlanta, under the auspices of the Japanese government.
