Faculty + Expertise

The University of South Carolina’s research areas include expertise and innovation across disciplines.

In nanotechnology, South Carolina researchers are focusing not only on “hard” science in areas such as catalysis, nanoelectronics, polymer nanocomposites, and nanobiotechnology, but also “soft” science such as the societal and ethical dimensions and implications of nano-scale research.

As a longtime leader in alternative energy, South Carolina has experts in software that provides 3-D models of fuel cells; high-temperature, solar-powered production and breakdown of hydrogen; hydrogen storage; solid oxide fuel cells; and renewable-source fuels. Faculty experts in engineering will also be called upon to pursue ways to reduce carbon emissions that come from coal, which is the focus of a $5 million commitment Santee Cooper Power and the South Carolina Electric Cooperatives made to the University in May 2007.

South Carolina faculty are national leaders in areas of exercise science, obesity prevention in children, and health disparities among minority populations with diseases such as diabetes, cancer and HIV/AIDS. Research on the mutation of cancer cells has discovered 176 genes that had previously not been linked to cancer.

Environmental researchers are focusing on improving and protecting water quality, and one chemical engineering professor is awaiting patent approval on a desalination process that could give him 14 patents for products or technology. University faculty are also experts in Geographic Information Sensing (GIS) and remote sensing, hurricanes, and the climate.

Faculty are also breaking new ground with such diverse discoveries as a genetically distinct species of hammerhead shark along the South Carolina coast and an injectable bone biomaterial—“bone cement”—that is generating licensing and royalty revenue for the University.
