Overview
Nanophysicist Thomas Crawford is at home in a world measured in pico-seconds and terahertz. But he’s also at home in Columbia.
The reason, says Crawford, a renowned hard drive researcher recruited to the University of South Carolina from Seagate Technologies in Pittsburgh, is Columbia’s amenities—or as, Crawford refers to them, “raw materials.” He is a scientist, after all.
“Great quality of life, great weather, proximity to recreational activities on par with any other place you can imagine, a low cost of living, and a place to grow innovation and grow a business economy,” he says, ticking off the attributes. “With the Midlands (Columbia area), Upstate and coast, that combination is a strong motivator. There are not many other places in country left that can combine a good quality of life and a good cost of living, as well as a potential for future growth.”
Quality of life

The Columbia area has been ranked second in a list of
“America’s Most Livable Mid-Sized communities”
by Partners for Livable Communities.
Live Well. Change the World.
The opportunity to conduct industry-changing research that you are passionate about can be even more rewarding if you can conduct that research in a place that you are passionate about.
