UofSC School of Medicine department ranked fifteenth in NIH funding nationwide

Faculty in the School of Medicine’s Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology capped off another successful year in 2014 by securing more than $9.2 million in annual funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

According to the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research, an independent organization that tracks NIH-funding levels, the University of South Carolina School of Medicine ranked 15th in funding among all pathology departments in the nation. The ranking represents the highest the school has ever finished in the pathology rankings.

“NIH continues to recognize the promise and potential exhibited in the research of our faculty,” said Mitzi Nagarkatti, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology. “We are proud of our department’s recent research accomplishments and record setting year in 2014 and encouraged that our findings may translate into healthier lives for the residents of our state and nation.”
